Mazzei Minute 07/25/25

Oklahoma education has hit rock bottom. The Oklahoman just reported on July 24^th that WalletHub ranked Oklahoma 50^th in the nation for the worst school system.  How can this be, in a state where we strive for excellence and greatness?

Just look at the NBA Champion OKC Thunder, and the many national championships won by both OU and OSU. There are also Oklahoma-based businesses that are tops in their industries, like Love’s Travel Stores and ONEOK. 

Why hasn’t the Oklahoma Legislature, with Republican supermajorities, or a Republican-led Oklahoma State Department of Education (SDE) fixed the ongoing disaster?  I’ll tell you why. The Legislature has yet to truly challenge the liberal education establishment, and the SDE has run aground from gross mismanagement like a ship that mistakenly sailed right into a harrowing reef.

The current education system suffers from the wrong curriculum and teaching methods that elite liberals forced into every school district.  The leaders of these school districts have no accountability to parents, and teachers are hard-pressed to actually teach when disorder rules the classroom.

The system is completely failing our hardworking teachers who passionately want to make a positive difference in the lives of our students and is betraying the students who deserve a first-class education.

We must reform our education system to ensure our children succeed. We need strong leaders who will fight tirelessly against the liberal leftists wanting to preserve the status quo.  We need a proven and quality curriculum that actually teaches kids math and reading.  School board elections should be moved to the November general election so local school leaders will have to finally answer to parents for results.  And we need common-sense laws in Oklahoma, just like those other conservative states are adopting, to bring discipline and order back to the classroom.

Excellence and greatness await our students.  Their destiny is to have economic prosperity with opportunities to be great leaders in Oklahoma and the nation.  All we must do is take up the fight for them with Trump-like tenacity and more pressure than the keepers of the status quo, who want to protect their turf and failures.
