State Question 841 has been officially filed with the Oklahoma Secretary of State, giving Oklahoma voters the opportunity to eliminate property taxes on homesteads.
There is a growing sentiment among the people of Oklahoma, particularly seniors, that paying endless amounts of money to counties and schools for bad results is neither equitable nor fair.
Also, for Oklahomans who have worked their entire lives to pay off their homes and no longer have kids in local schools, having to pay property taxes is like paying rent to the government. They feel like they never truly own their own home. Miss just one annual payment, and the local sheriff can seize the property. This is wrong, and it’s long past time for change.
If enough signatures are gathered, SQ 841 will go to a statewide vote – and given the current environment, it is very likely to pass.
Under the proposal, property tax liability would phase out by 33⅓% per year beginning in 2027. By 2030, there would no longer be property taxes in Oklahoma, making us the first state in the nation to take this step.
Predictably, county and school establishment leaders will claim the sky is falling. Of course, core services will still need funding, and during the 2027-2029 transition period, the Oklahoma Legislature will have ample time to structure a stable, responsible plan to fund sheriffs’ offices, county road maintenance, and school bond obligations.
However, making this transition will require proven leadership. Oklahoma needs a Governor with both the political will and the financial expertise to make it happen.
With decades of experience in both the private and public financial sectors, I know there are always ways to innovate, increase efficiency, and reduce spending while delivering better results for taxpayers.
SQ 841 may unsettle those who rely on unchecked taxpayer spending, but it will energize conservatives committed to building a fairer, more efficient tax system.
I am developing a bold plan to transition Oklahoma into America’s first no-property-tax state. And whether SQ 841 passes or not, eliminating property taxes will remain a top priority in a Governor Mazzei administration.
